Digbeth First Friday-Eastern Bloc Songs

For Digbeth First Friday Centrala presents 149 minutes compilation of audio-visual materials (1963 – 1986) sets out to extend the history of European pop culture by including the impact of music by artists of Central and Eastern European origin, such as Czerwone Gitary, Marta Kubišová, Olympic, Hana and Petr Ulrychovi, Illés, Czes?aw Niemen and Synkopy 61.

The specificity of these artists lies in their singular stylistic identity – they appear as a unique blend of various influences drawn from local musical traditions and Anglo-American patterns, developed under the restrictions of oppressive regimes.

What is important for Wayne Burrows’ approach to those issues is the implicit parallel between state restricted artistic freedom during the 1963 – 1988 period in Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and other Eastern Bloc countries and the contemporary shape of artists’ working conditions, which depend on Western neoliberal ideology.
