On World Mental Health Day, we shine a light on the unique mental health challenges faced by Central and Eastern European (CEE) migrants in the UK.
Research by MigZEN, the Society for Academic Primary Care (SAPC), and other studies show that CEE migrants often face disproportionate levels of mental health issues, exacerbated by migration stress, cultural displacement, and systemic barriers to healthcare.
According to MigZEN, CEE migrants often report high levels of psychological distress due to language barriers, social isolation, and post-Brexit uncertainty. Meanwhile, research from SAPC confirms that these communities experience lower life satisfaction and greater difficulty accessing appropriate mental health services, compared to other migrant groups. Their mental health concerns often remain under-addressed due to cultural stigma, leading to further isolation and vulnerability.
Additionally, the Birmingham Suicide Prevention Report highlights concerning rates of suicide within the CEE community in the city. The report underscores the urgent need for tailored mental health support for this group, as their suicide rates are higher compared to other populations in Birmingham.
At Centrala, we recognise these gaps and are committed to finding solutions. In collaboration with Birmingham Public Health, we are conducting research to better understand why the CEE community in Birmingham faces such high mental health risks, and how we can help improve the situation. Through this research, we hope to create long-term strategies that not only raise awareness but also reshape local mental health services to be more inclusive of CEE migrant experiences.
We encourage anyone from the CEE community, or those who know individuals from these groups, to fill out or share our survey. Your input will help inform this crucial research, allowing us to advocate for better mental health support and services for CEE migrants across the UK. Together, we can create lasting change and provide much-needed resources for our communities.
Take Action: Please participate in our mental health survey to help us shape future services that better support the CEE community.
