PHOTOGRAPHS is a solo exhibition by renowned music photographer Steve Gullick, presented at Centrala. The exhibition showcases a selection of Gullick’s most iconic images, documenting some of the most significant figures in alternative music from the 1990s and beyond.
Gullick began his career in 1990 with his first commission for Sounds magazine. Over the following decade, he became one of the leading photographers in British music journalism, contributing regularly to Melody Maker and NME and producing album sleeves and publicity photography for record labels. His photographs are recognised for their raw immediacy and emotional depth, capturing musicians at their most intimate and expressive.
Throughout his career, Gullick has maintained close creative relationships with artists including Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, Mark Lanegan, Cat Power, and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, among others. His work has become synonymous with a period of music defined by intensity, experimentation, and individuality.
Reflecting on his early years, Gullick recalls:
“Between 1985 & 1987, I used to travel through Birmingham every day on the journey from my home in Coventry to college in Wednesbury, I learned a lot there, had access to great equipment & used it to hone my craft, alas I failed the course on maths… I’m thrilled to be showing my work at Centrala!”
Photographs traces the evolution of Gullick’s career and highlights his distinctive approach to portraiture, one rooted in collaboration, trust, and the shared creative energy between photographer and subject.
