‘Digital Nostalgia’ is an audio visual installation, created in collaboration between Centrala and _kyjhi
This week-long audio-visual installation at Centrala reimagines Birmingham through the lens of retro game design, using low-resolution textures, low-poly models, and the visual grammar of 90s and early 2000s consoles. By focusing on often-overlooked details, peeling paint, tower blocks, forgotten underpasses, the exhibition renders real urban spaces uncanny, blending memory and simulation in a way that is both intimate and estranging.
Accompanying the 3D visuals will be a specially composed ambient soundtrack, created by _kyjhi, which deepens the atmosphere of the exhibition. The soundscape will echo the moods of these digital landscapes, dreamlike, melancholic, and immersive, inviting audiences to slow down and inhabit a familiar city reimagined through texture and tone.
_kyjhi is a multidisciplinary artist based in the West Midlands working at the intersection of digital art, music production, and photography. Garnering significant attention across social media, _kyjhi’s renderings of Birmingham have resonated deeply with audiences for their ability to turn the everyday into the ethereal.
