Matter of Anthropocene exhibition

'Matter of Anthropocene' is a group show by Małgorzata Markiewicz with Katarzyna Depta-Garapich, Diana Lelonek and Mateusz Szczypiński.

Three of the four videos shown at Centrala Gallery in Birmingham are a documentation of activities accompanying the “Matter of Antropocene” exhibition at Mathare Art Gallery in Nairobi, Kenya in July 2019. Those videos are also a record of reception of the artworks in the context outside of the art gallery environment. The videos are accompanied by notes written by Małgorzata Markiewicz from her perspective in the few months after the return from Kenya.

But what about the matter of Anthropocene?

In Nairobi we were unable to produce any physical matter. However by embodying the participant observation role, Małgorzata Markiewicz had an opportunity to look at the interconnected body of personal relations which are the consequence of added up tribal relationships, colonialism, post colonialism and capitalism. That is the real matter of Anthropocene which is worth a closer look.

A counterbalance of the films from Kenya is a video by Katarzyna Depta-Garapich titled “One Hundred Sheep” documenting a performative action of working with one hundred kilograms of raw wool during the residency at Władysław Hasior Gallery, Tatra Museum, Zakopane, Poland in February 2019. “One Hundred Sheep” is an ongoing performative project originally inspired by the relationship between humans and animals, and man’s dependence on the animal in his/her care.
