How can migrant communities help shape the future of ageing in Birmingham?
We invite members of migrant communities, community leaders, carers, advocates, organisers, artists, support workers, and residents to join an important community conversation with Birmingham Public Health about Birmingham’s new Ageing Well Strategy.
This is a real opportunity for our communities to be heard — and to help influence how future services, support, and policies are shaped for older people across the city.
This discussion will explore the invisible barriers to ageing well in migrant communities, with a special focus on:
• Language Access & Information Gaps
How do older migrants and families access information, understand services, navigate health, care, housing, and support systems, and know their rights?
• Digital Exclusion
As more services move online, what happens to people who face barriers linked to technology, language, confidence, or access?
• Hidden Carers in Migrant Communities
Many people quietly care for ageing parents, relatives, neighbours, or dependants — often while balancing work, migration experiences, cultural expectations, financial pressures, and limited support. How can these experiences be better recognised and supported?
The Ageing Well Strategy aims to improve the health, wellbeing, independence, dignity, and social connection of older people in Birmingham. But for this strategy to truly work, it must reflect the lived experiences, challenges, strengths, and realities of migrant communities.
The event will include a guest speaker with many years of experience managing care homes, sharing insights into the challenges faced by migrant older people, families, and carers within care settings, alongside perspectives from organisations working directly with migrant communities.
Together, we will create space to:
• Share lived experiences and frontline perspectives
• Discuss what “ageing well” means across different migrant communities
• Identify barriers affecting migrant elders, carers, and families
• Explore practical solutions and recommendations
• Help shape Birmingham’s Ageing Well Strategy and future decision-making
