Empowering Migrant Communities Through Health Literacy
Funded by the Fairer Future Localities Fund from the Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care System (ICS), this 3 year initiative is part of a wider mission to tackle health inequalities and improve outcomes for migrant communities in Ladywood, Birmingham by helping to develop health literacy.
We know that accessing healthcare in a new country can be overwhelming. For many migrants and refugees, language barriers, unfamiliar systems, and a lack of culturally relevant information make it difficult to get the support they need. Even basic tasks, like booking a GP appointment or understanding a prescription, can feel out of reach.
This project is our response to those challenges.
Our current health literacy ESOL class is full, please email community@centrala-space.org.uk to be added to the waiting list for the next course, starting in February 2026.
Over the next three years, we’ll be delivering weekly, health-focused ESOL sessions that combine Medical English with practical, accessible health education. These classes are designed to empower participants with the language and knowledge needed to confidently navigate the NHS and take control of their health.
Participants will:
Learn how to manage prescriptions, recognise symptoms, and make GP appointments
Explore strategies for maintaining physical and mental wellbeing
Improve digital health literacy through guided sessions on NHS portals, booking systems, and accessing trusted health information
Build confidence through healthcare role-plays and practical activities
Engage directly with healthcare professionals offering culturally sensitive advice
This programme is open to migrants and refugees living in Ladywood. Shaped by the rich diversity of our local communities, the sessions are inclusive, supportive, and grounded in real-life experiences.
