Centrala is pleased to announce the launch of “Improving English and Pathways to employment project– a comprehensive programme supporting Ukrainian residents in Birmingham.
Running until the end of a year, this Programme brings together General ESOL and ESOL for Employment. Alongside we will offer Employability Support. Together, these strands will provide accessible, supportive pathways for individuals to build confidence, improve their English, and move towards employment
This programme responds to the needs of the migrant communities and it’s designed for those not currently working and people ready to work but in need of targeted support to understand the UK job market and communicate confidently in professional settings.
Limited English can make it difficult to access services, form connections, or navigate daily life. This programme has been designed building on Centrala’s experience delivering community-based, multilingual, and inclusive support for migrant communities.
What the Project Will Offer
The programme will offer:
– Classes for beginners in Saturdays 10am to 12pm
-Online classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays 6pm to 8pm
-Employability support on Wednesdays 10am to 5.30pm
-Coaching and access to training and work experience
General ESOL will offer weekly, community-based ESOL classes focused on building confidence in everyday communication. Sessions will cover real-life situations such as visiting the GP, shopping, using public transport, and speaking with neighbours or schools. Teaching will be practical and interactive, using conversation practice, role play, and simple weekly tasks to support learning beyond the classroom.Basic digital skills will also be included, alongside regular guided outings to places such as cafés, libraries, and local shops, helping learners practise English in real-world settings.
ESOL for Employment will offer sessions designed to support progression into work and professional training. Sessions will focus on workplace English and key employability skills, including CV writing, job applications, and interview preparation.
Participants will also receive personalised support to help them identify career goals, understand the UK job market, and apply for opportunities, with teaching adapted to reflect their interests and ambitions.
Employability Support Programme will provide personalised one-to-one support for participants who are ready to take the next steps towards employment or training.
Participants will work closely with our Ukrainian-speaking advisor, who will provide tailored guidance in a supportive and culturally sensitive environment. Together, they will develop individual action plans, explore skills and experience, and set realistic goals.
Support will include CV development, writing supporting statements, applying for real job opportunities, and preparing for interviews. Participants will also gain a clearer understanding of the UK job market and what employers expect.
Through partnerships with employers, training providers, and organisations such as Jobcentre Plus, participants will be supported to access progression routes, including potential work placements in areas such as administration, events, retail, and catering.
