Exhibition / 7 November – 6 December 2025
Centrala is thrilled to announce that for November’s Digbeth First Friday we will be launching ‘PHOTOGRAPHS’, a month-long exhibition by the acclaimed music photographer Steve Gullick.
Gullick is one of the most respected photographers in British music history. Beginning his career with Sounds magazine in 1990, he quickly became a defining presence in the pages of Melody Maker and NME, regularly contributing cover features and portraits that captured the raw spirit of the 1990s music scene. Alongside his editorial work, Gullick has also produced album covers and publicity photography for record labels, working closely with some of the era’s most influential artists, including Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Mark Lanegan, Nick Cave, Cat Power, and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, among many others.
Reflecting on his early creative journey, Gullick says:
“Between 1985 & 1987, I used to travel through Birmingham every day on the journey from my home in Coventry to college in Wednesbury, I learned a lot there, had access to great equipment & used it to hone my craft, alas I failed the course on maths… I’m thrilled to be showing my work at Centrala!”
Alongside the exhibition, in our downstairs venue we are hosting a gig with The Breedling and Tenebrous Liar from 8PM.
Chris Spalton, The Breedling, comes from this land and has long circled the periphery of the UK music scene through his work in art, design, and video for notable artists including Part Chimp and Hey Colossus. The Breedling marks his first foray into music-making and his debut release. The project blends bleak electronics, heavy drone, industrial rhythms, and the haunted folklore of East Anglia.
Tenebrous Liar is a British musical project led by photographer Steve Gullick. Known for his raw and intense approach to both music and photography, Gullick has guided Tenebrous Liar through nearly two decades of releases, forging a sound that moves between harshness and atmospheric depth.
