This December, for the last Digbeth First Friday of 2024, Centrala is excited to present SWANBACK, a compelling hybrid film by Marija Nemčenko. Combining fictional and documentary elements, SWANBACK delves into the complex symbolism of the swan—a figure of purity and aristocracy—and its role in supporting British and Russian imperialism. Through a narrative both reflective and critical, Nemčenko challenges how cultural symbols have been used to reinforce structures of power and oppression.

The film stars former classical ballet dancer Oliver Connew as a fictional migrant character inspired by the experiences of Lithuanian workers in the UK. Connew’s character confronts and deconstructs stereotypes while reinterpreting the political symbolism embedded in Swan Lake, casting a new light on the famous ballet and its associations with empire and identity.

As part of the evening, SWANBACK composers Shakeeb Abu Hamdan and Sholto Dobie will perform a live set. They will recreate the sounds and processes that shaped the film’s evocative score, enhancing the immersive atmosphere of the event. For more information on Shakeeb Abu Hamdan’s music, please visit his Bandcamp page.

To conclude the night, Centrala invites guests to stay for a special Digbeth First Friday afterparty featuring Tom Richards and the Midlands Metro Alliance, rounding off the evening with vibrant sounds and social connections in the heart of Digbeth’s cultural scene.
