Centrala Space Art Gallery and the University of Birmingham are proud to announce the release of the extended version of the report In Between Spaces: Inclusion and Representation of Central and Eastern European (CEE) Artists in the UK Creative Economy. Building on the success of the original 2021 report, which highlighted the underrepresentation of CEE artists in the Midlands, this updated version expands its scope to include data from across England, offering a more comprehensive view of the challenges faced by these artists nationally.
The initial report received significant attention for its focus on the Midlands, where many CEE artists struggle with barriers to inclusion and visibility in the UK’s creative economy. In response to feedback requesting a broader perspective, the research team has extended their findings to reflect the experiences of artists in other major cities across England. This extension reaffirms the critical importance of the original report while offering fresh insights into how these challenges manifest on a national scale.
The project, funded by the College of Arts and Law at the University of Birmingham, is a collaborative effort between Centrala and the academic team led by Professor Sara Jones. Researchers Jakub Ceglarz, Tania Constantin, and Elizabeth Lamle also played key roles in the extended research, which stems from an AHRC M4C Creative Economies Engagement Fellowship.
The European Parliament Liaison Office in the UK, through its cultural diplomacy efforts, has provided vital support for the report launch. Known for championing European values, the Liaison Office continues to play a key role in fostering creative discussion and cultural exchange.
This extended report not only reaffirms the findings of its predecessor but also provides an in-depth look at the evolving dynamics of the UK’s creative sector and its inclusivity, or lack thereof, towards artists from Central and Eastern Europe.
