Centrala Online Commission Programme

Centrala Commissions

We are offering four UK based visual artists a £500 grant to produce new digital works within the limits of working under social distancing measures. The winning commissions will

be showcased across our online channels from June 2020 to September 2020. Our programme is designed to support, encourage and enable creatives to continue developing their artistic practice during the times of social distancing and isolation.

What we’re looking for:

We are looking for proposals that question, reflect on and respond to new living conditions, which have changed drastically and rapidly due to the COVID19 crisis. We encourage

applicants to address the current local and global conditions in relation to COVID19 and use this opportunity to create a new piece of work in digital form.

We are particularly keen for proposals that explore the following themes:

● Self-reflection and self-care during isolation

● The effect on mental and general health

● Isolation of the body and mind

● Relations between individuals and communities

● Local and governmental responses to the crisis

● Social and political activism during the times of the pandemic and deconstruction of the online methods of communication.

We are looking for exciting and dynamic proposals that may include multimedia visual essays, a series of pre-recorded or live videos or performances, interactive online activities,

and/or digital art. We also encourage an interactive element to the proposal, which includes online participation. Static mediums such as sculptures or installations could be edited in a creative form, so they function as an equally exciting piece of digital art.

All applicants must observe social distancing measures when producing works and we encourage applicants to explore the use of materials within their direct vicinity, considering materials that you may not usually use as a part of your practice. Your work will be presented online but that doesn't mean you can’t weave in other mediums through video, audio and/or interactive mobile applications.

Successful applicants will be offered a grant of £500 to cover all production costs and materials. Each successful applicant’s work will be showcased across Centrala’s online channels and will also be archived on our website as part of our online programme.

Proposals must include:

● Name and address

● Artist’s bio and portfolio

● Artist’s CV

● Social media tags and links

● State clearly:

○ The concept, including format and medium of your artwork

○ How you’re addressing the themes within this call

○ How you’ll create your artwork and how long it’s going to take

○ Your desired audience

○ Whether the artwork includes a participatory element – if yes, who will be participating and how

Applications are open to UK based artists only.

We encourage artists from all backgrounds to apply, although we will prioritise applicants from the Central and Eastern European community, in line with our social mission, as they are highly underrepresented in the culture sector.

First commission: 10th June 2020

Second commission: 10th July 2020

Third commission: 10th August 2020

Fourth deadline: 10th September 2020

All unsuccessful applications will be notified but unfortunately due to the high volume of applications we anticipate, we are unable to offer feedback. If your proposal is not selected, don’t let this get you down, keep an eye on our online channels for more opportunities in the future.
