Centrala is pleased to announce the first UK solo show of Scarlet Scardanelli’s work for fifteen years. This wide-ranging exhibition will be more than 30 oil-on-canvas and mixed-media paintings. Part of a series of surreal and psychedelic images of humanoid, hermaphroditic forms, the paintings represent the artist’s playful yet apocalyptic interpretation of that moment just before waking from a deep fever dream. Her work synthesizes the polarity of sexuality in a series of abstract figures. Many of the paintings include intricate items found on the streets of New York and London and most are framed in raw handmade metal frames.
The exhibition opens at 6.00pm on Wednesday 9th November 2016 with a reception hosted by the artist. At 7pm, the exhibited paintings will be auctioned. Items not sold in the auction will be available for purchase until the exhibition closes.
Although Scarlet Scardanelli has been painting her whole life, it was during her years in New York (1991-95) that her unique style emerged. She has exhibited in New York, London, Berlin and Birmingham. Her major influences include Mark Chagall, Wassily Kandinsky and Frida Kahlo. Scarlet took time out from painting for several years to concentrate on film and digital projects. She returned to painting these last years and this exhibition marks an exciting homecoming to her first love, painting.
