We hope you can join us on International Workers’ Day.
We are presenting a selection of films on the Kurdish question, with time for discussion and food. The documentaries and feature films will explore the women’s struggle, Kurds in the Turkish state and Kurdish culture.
There is a community of active Kurds who have made links with other groups on the left in Birmingham. There has been a democratic experiment taking place in the predominately Kurdish area of Rojava, or Northern Syria since 2012. The resistance against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Kobanê has woken the world to the cause of the Kurdish women. Organised armed men and women from Rojava successfully defended their cities and villages and their lives and values from jihadist forces.
Why did Kobanê not fall to the better equipped and supplied murderous forces besieging it? There might be an answer in the radical social revolution that accompanies their rifles.
