What does it mean, practically, for migrants around the world for us to go ‘beyond borders’? More importantly, what are the borders and barriers that they face?
We invite you to discuss with us the myriad of barriers faced by migrants including housing, right to work, legal support/the legal system and the causes of those barriers such as the state, the government, reactionary media and the question of the EU and Fortress Europe. The state’s role in bureaucratising the process for seeking asylum is a key way in which they limit the support we, as non-governmental organisations, solidarity and political groups and individuals are able to give to migrants here in the UK. They also seek to obscure how years of bad foreign policy in the Middle East has been a major cause of the phenomenon they now see as a ‘crisis’. How can we push beyond being limited by absurd policies, laws and bureaucratisation to provide both a practical and political solution? We need to be prepared to break the rules!
